"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the

Father except through me." - John 14:6

Get excited for this year's annual ministry theme, Pursue. Every coach and athlete is pursuing something: earning a scholarship, winning a championship or landing a contract. As the stakes rise, the drive behind that pursuit intensifies. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but what if pursuing those things ultimately isn’t healthy or good for us in the long run? Join us this year as we dive into pursuing the things of God.

EMBRACE YOUR CALL: TRUST THE MISSION

Legacies of sports legends live on in Halls of Fame, record books and stories told through generations. The great comebacks, Cinderella stories, buzzer beaters and personal and team achievements grow magnificent the more we stop and think how difficult the odds were to attain the outcome. We are amazed at what has been accomplished, and something strikes a flame inside us to step up into this realm of triumph.

We long for significance. We long to know if what we do is making a difference and impacting lives. We want to know that our days aren’t wasted and God has given us something to do. We believe He has placed a calling on our lives, but we aren’t sure what that is or how to go about it. How do we know when we are living out the mission? How do we know what God has placed in us to be and do?

Remember what He has already done.

WHAT IT'S WORTH: COMMIT TO THE TEAM

We’ve spent time, prayer and heart investment into becoming more like Christ and connecting with the best people who exhibit His traits in their lives. We’ve done the work to determine how we can best represent God in our lives and to find the right people who will encourage and strengthen our faith. And we’ve allowed God to shape our hearts into disciples who seek after His Kingdom and model the life of Jesus to teammates, friends and family.

We’ve found our people; now, are we willing to commit and go all in with them? God has called us to accountability—are we willing? Will you help others walk in line with Christ, encourage them if they get off course, and are you willing to BE corrected and refined? Are you ready to give and receive advice and follow for growth in constant pursuit of Christ?

DO THE WORK: DRAFT THE TEAM

In the professional sports world, draft preparation begins long before the actual draft day itself. There’s a year’s worth of analysis, examination, checking in with coaching staff on a player’s character as well as ability. Hours upon hours are dedicated to finding the right player who will best fit into the organization’s plans athletically and as a whole. Scouts watch film and live games of multiple players, watching how they react to calls, how they connect with their teammates and what they bring to their position.  When draft day arrives, each team has its list of players they hope to add to their roster and do everything in their power to make sure they get who they want.

What if we took as much care in constructing our team of people who will inspire and encourage our spiritual walk? What if we were selective and spent time getting to know someone to see how they acted when no one’s looking or lived out their faith in God?

TAKE ASSESSMENT: EVALUATE THE TEAM

Think about some of the greatest teams throughout history. They moved effortlessly together, as one. Each player knew their role and gave their best for the good of the team. They shared a common goal and worked together to make that goal a reality.

Like all the great teams, we need to have the right players on our spiritual team to help us grow in relationship with Christ. Now that we’ve surrendered to Jesus and chose to trust in Him, the next step is to form a team that will walk with us as we walk out our faith.

This month, we dig into what it looks like to Evaluate The Team and take a look at who we hang around and how we might adjust to place us with people who will best support our faith and lead us closer to Jesus.

IT'S TIME: SURRENDER YOUR HEART

In competition, we’re taught not to surrender. We play with everything we have, refusing to give up one inch on the field or one point to the opposing team. It’s all or nothing, and we refuse to give in. That’s the power and thrill of play. We’re fierce with our convictions and play with a deep sense of loyalty to our team and what it represents.

Surrender is unyielding, but what about when it comes to our faith? If we take the same perspective off the field as on it, are we closing ourselves off for deeper meaning? If we are to Pursue Life, shouldn’t we stop putting off the upside-down ways of Christ that actually bring us to a place of abundance?

Sometimes, giving in is the greatest decision we can make. It’s time to surrender.

BE INTENTIONAL: EXAMINE YOUR HEART

This month, we dig into what it looks like to Examine Your Heart and remain in a heart posture that seeks to understand the “whys” behind our goals.

We’re all driven by something, whether we’re aware of it or not. We spend countless hours in the gym on our jump shot because we want to get better—or we want to be the best.

We go the extra mile in practice because we willingly sacrifice for our team—or we feel like we have something to prove. Our motivating factors determine the “why” behind the “what”. If we can be honest with ourselves and understand what pushes our performance, we can assess what we need to move forward and what adjustments must be made. It’s tough and requires us to get real, but it’s for our best.

BE HONEST: OPEN YOUR HEART

If we are pursuing goals based on harmful motivations, then achieving those goals will never result in true fulfillment and may be an indicator that we are simply trying to replace something much bigger that’s missing in our hearts.

Those negative “whys” are not from God but from an enemy that doesn’t want us to experience the fullness of life.

Is it possible that a better life awaits us? Is it possible that there’s a better path that God has laid out for us? Jesus came to give us life in full, so we Pursue what life in Him means. The first step in pursuing your new life in Christ is to be open to the possibility your motivations might be pushing you in the wrong direction.

ACCOUNTABLE: REACH THE TRUTH

There’s nothing more effective than a team that moves and acts as one unit. The teams where each player knows his or her role and embraces it, where coaches unify their players to play for the bigger picture and the field is full of a relaxed and confident atmosphere. These teams know their purpose and give their best for one another.

The same can be said for the importance of finding teammates in our daily faith walk. We need to come alongside each other to stand firm on the foundation of God, build one another up and be unified in Christ.

As Scripture and prayer are pivotal pieces to a life in Christ, accountability is also key. It keeps us connected to people, strengthens our resolve in trying times and brings encouragement when we are down.

We need others who can call us to God’s higher standard and walk with us along the way as we strive to Reach for Truth.
